Audemars Piguet Unveils Collectors Lounge for Art Basel Hong Kong This Week

For the second consecutive year, artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz has partnered with Audemars Piguet to create a special installations for the brand’s presence in the Collectors Lounge of Art Basel Hong Kong 2017 (March 23-27). Errazuriz was inspired by the brand’s home base, Vallée de Joux, and has created a large-scale installation for the booth. The piece this year, Second Nature, is a compilation of warm materials, primarily wood, which is reminiscent of the valley’s nearby Jura Mountains, and symbolizes the brand’s sense of history and endless growth. Following the growth of a tree, the installation displays the stages of which the brand is progressing—rooted in its spirit and commitment to rich heritage, branching out despite its environment, and flourishing in growth to evolve.

“Second Nature should remind the viewer of the basic principles of Audemars Piguet’s watchmaking legacy including its home in the Vallée de Joux. The strong base of the tree sculpture is grounded on core values and the deep roots are embedded in history, yet the tips of its branches reach out and are always growing, exploring and searching towards the future,” said Errazuriz. “It is the perfect example of Audemars Piguet’s commitment to helping artists and designers bring to life the visions they imagine.”

The tree sculpture—created by hand-drawn sketches, computer milling, and 3-D printing—is set to be exhibited alongside timepieces curate by the brand’s museum. Attendees will be able to see three distinct categories of watchmaking art at the lounge, such as watches with with Perpetual Calendars, decorations, and finishings (including the Florentine hammering technique, which was applied on the Royal Oak Frosted Gold), and gem-setting savoir-faire, showcased by three exceptional timepieces.

“We are delighted to continue working with Sebastian Errazuriz this year. Through his attention to detail and understanding of artistic excellence, technical mastery, tradition, innovation, and of course, nature, he has again achieved a design that transports the essence of the Vallée de Joux into the Art Basel lounge,” said Olivier Audemars, Vice President of the Board of Directors at Audemars Piguet.

Also on view in the lounge is a video installation entitled Circadian Rhythm by Chinese artist Cheng Ran. Like Errazuriz, Ran was inspired by Vallée de Joux, and created a landscape-meets-soundscape installation for guests to enjoy. Mossy forests and flowing water streams allow for the viewer to travel through an intimate journey, later bringing them to the transitioning sounds of mechanical ticks and watch complication sounds.

“Audemars Piguet has pushed watchmaking boundaries ever since it was founded in 1875, a characteristic that is also fundamental to the production of great art. Through his video, Cheng Ran reflects on the very heart of our craft and our connection to nature while managing to take the viewer on an unexpected journey,” said Audemars of Ran’s work. “Circadian Rhythm combines both art and watchmaking into a single pulse, like two hearts beating in unison.”

Audemars Piguet first worked with Ran in October 2016 when presenting his work at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, in conjunction with the brand’s watch history exhibition “To Break The Rules, You Must First Master Them.”

“I was inspired by the artistry and attention to detail Audemars Piguet dedicates to creating one single timepiece. I hope viewers will enjoy the immersive excursion I have created through landscapes and soundscapes, transporting them through experimental types of media,” said Ran. “I am thankful to have been given the chance to continue my journey with Audemars Piguet since the piece was presented in Shanghai at the end of last year.”
