A Seamless Swiss Partnership

La Prairie celebrated year two of partnering with Art Basel this past December during Art Basel in Miami Beach. From December 6-9, 2018, the Swiss luxury skincare brand was well represented in the art fair’s Collectors Lounge, debuting both a site-specific commission and its latest skincare break-through.

“Art Basel in Miami Beach marks our second year of partnership with Art Basel, which we believe is the ideal fit to express La Prairie’s intrinsic link with the world of art,” said Greg Prodromides, Chief Marketing Officer of La Prairie Group.

Throughout its history, La Prairie has been connected to art and design. The Swiss brand is recognized not only for its age-defying products, but its signature blue packaging, originally inspired by the cobalt blue of artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Its bottles’ sleek shape, lines, and curves, are an obvious reference to the minimalist aesthetics of Swiss architects like Le Corbusier and contemporaries like Herzog & de Meuron.

La Prairie’s ongoing partnership with Art Basel—the biggest art fair in the world—has coincided with a number or artistic projects, collaborations, and exhibitions. Just in 2018, at Art Basel in Hong Kong in March, they revealed a film project around the power of light from Julian Charrière in homage to La Prairie’s White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire. Later in June at Art Basel in Basel, the spirit of science and indulge of Skin Caviar Premier was captured by Manon Wertenbroek in a series of photographic works.

Chapter 2

Embracing Swiss Design

Most recently, the skincare brand tapped Mario Botta to create a site-specific installation for its pavilion within the Collectors Lounge Art Basel in Miami Beach. The Swiss architect is famous for what’s known as the “Ticino Tendenza” or “Ticino Style,” displaying precise, hand-crafted characteristics. Clearly influenced by the Bauhaus School, and predecessors like Le Corbusier, Luis Kahn, and Carlo Scarpa, he has come to define a new tradition in Swiss contemporary architecture.

With a mix of modernism and rationalism, Botta displays a unique understanding of both the surrounding landscape and the possible poetry in design. His vision for the marriage of form and function is behind such iconic buildings as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, the Jean Tinguely Museum in Basel, and the Watari-Um Art Gallery in Tokyo.

Botta was asked to consider La Prairie’s new Platinum Rare Cellular Life-Lotion. He translated the products’ potent efficacy into a search for the origin of beauty—a search to which the Swiss brand has long been committed.

“In developing La Prairie’s latest innovation—Platinum Rare Cellular Life-Lotion—the Swiss scientists at La Prairie sought to pinpoint the origin of rejuvenation, to isolate and capture the power at the heart of the rejuvenation process. It is this life force that inspired us to enter into this very special artistic collaboration with Mario,” said Prodromides.

Chapter 3

Mario Botta’s Intimate Archisculpture

The result of La Prairie commissioning Mario Botta is a full-scale Archisculpture, with walls of curved vertical wood slates. Organic in shape, the immersive structure is meant to be both observed from its exterior and explored within its interior. Its feminine, parenthetical body offered a moment of respite from the busy fair in December—a chance for reflection and pause during a week of intense visual stimulation. The piece featured a pulsating, muted sound composition that made for an even more intimate experience.

“I wanted this all-encompassing moment to be a mutual one, exchanged in a quiet, personal fashion,” said Botta. “Life begins in the most cosseted, intimate of spaces, and I wanted to offer the viewer that experience again—to offer the opportunity to reflect on the origins of life,” he continued.

The special installation, on view through December 9 in Miami, was also marked by a donation from La Prairie to the new cultural center designed by Botta, the Fondazione Teatro dell’Architettura. The new museum sits near the Academy of Architecture of the Università della Svizzera Italiana’s (UNI) Turconi building. Measuring 2,300 square meters across four levels, the location has plans for exhibition, workshop, conference, and concert spaces.

“A contribution to a cultural institution is the natural progression of La Prairie’s continued engagement and presence in the world of contemporary art,” said Prodromides.

Continuing on its quest for timeless beauty, La Prairie’s dedication and understanding of the importance of the shared experience of art is clear. The Swiss house’s latest collaboration with Botta is undoubtedly proof of its ongoing pursuit to elevate the art of skincare.
