Baselworld 2013: Timeless Timepieces from Hermes, Ulysse Nardin and de Grisogono

We continue our Baselworld coverage with Hermes, Ulysse Nardin, and de Grisogono, with each brand tinkering at timelessness.

Hermes proves it’s serious about watchmaking with the rose gold Arceau Temps Suspendu timepiece. Female watch aficionados will be thrilled by the choice of a Havana, red agate, or ember-colored alligator band paired with a cream or coffee-colored watch face. The rose gold case and opaline silver dial, along with swoon-worthy white, natural mother-of-pearl detailing, hark back to a bygone era of elegance and charm, befitting of this month’s heightening lust for everything Great Gatsby.

Carnival of Venice Minute Repeater

Notably, Hermes is establishing itself as more than just a maker of haute horology. The Arceau Temps Suspendu is a sophisticated piece of watchmaking that features suspended time phases coordinated by two synchronized column wheels, enabling the watch to make time run smoothly or literally suspend it.

Ulysse Nardin is delivering the limited-edition Carnival of Venice Minute Repeater, finding inspiration in the romantic city of Venice with a blend of artistic illustration and impressive engineering. Back in the 1980s, Ulysse Nardin looked toward the 17th-century invention, the “Jaquemart” (a set of beautifully animated figures set into the dial that move in sync with an activated minute repeater) to create a unique and complicated mechanical wristwatch that symbolized the rebirth of the minute repeater.

Today, the same premise has been used to create the Carnival of Venice Minute Repeater – a limited edition of 18 watches with the possibility of a lavish 18-karat rose gold option. The eye-catching hand-chiseling and ornamented engravings decorate a dial created by an enamel champlevé technique. The ostentatious timepiece then struts its stuff one step further when the two Jaquemarts depicted on the dial lift their masks as the hours, quarters, and minutes chime.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in glittering style, Geneva-based jeweler de Grisogono presents the candy-inspired Sugar watch for women. Those with a sweet tooth will fawn over the white gold casing encrusted with 90 white diamonds cascading from the bezel of the watch. Even the clasp is held together with a further dozen white diamonds, while the dial is a shimmery white mother-of-pearl. The strap itself is an icy white galuchat bracelet, and the caseback is paved with yet more precious stones so that only the watch bearer themselves will know the true value of this extraordinary, luxe accessory. These bejeweled luxury showpieces are also available in variations of emeralds and blue and orange sapphires. It’s therefore without a doubt that at each flick of the wrist de Grisogono’s ultimate bling ring promises to sparkle like no other during Baselworld.
